07 Mar Winterize Your Winch: Tips for Cold Weather Readiness
Cooler weather will be headed our way soon, and like a car, or anything that uses fluid mechanically, a winch needs to be winterized to ensure optimum performance during cold weather months.
No matter what the application, any hydraulic or mechanical winch will need to be serviced and prepped. Now may be the time to get the gear oil changed (if your geographical area warrants it), and your fluid levels checked in the winch and also in the system used to power it. Keeping oil fresh and full will help keep your winch and hydraulic components running smooth, and help to prevent it from failing.
While you are doing your inspection, double-check the wire rope you are using, looking for any signs of wear or damage. If you notice any damage or weakness, replace it. Cold weather can cause your wire rope to become more brittle, and the danger of a line snapping due to the combination of cold and wear will be increased.
